Podcasting? Yep, we got that.

The number seven just got a whole lot luckier if you ask me. Beta 7 was just released (download it now), and just when I thought no new exciting features would be added to MT4 because honestly, we really are trying to release this sucker, our developers start pulling rabbits out of their hats...

Following a lively discussion on ProNet, Brad and Antoine teamed up to deliver to Movable Type for the first time: fully integrated, out-of-the-box podcasting support. Yep, no plugin required. Here is a summary of the features they added to support podcasting:

  • Introduced several new template tags which can be used in RSS and Atom feeds, as well as on the published blog side to reference assets that have been uploaded into a post, thereby allowing a user to:
    • Upload an mp3 via the posting interface, and have that mp3 encoded as an enclosure in an Atom or RSS feed.
    • Wrap an audio/video player around uploaded assets or files in the blog's published HTML.
  • Introduced several new file types including "Audio" and "Video." This will allow users from within the application to filter by media or file types to see "All Audio Files" or "All Video Files".
  • No feature in Movable Type would be complete without the ability to aggregate media assets from across multiple blogs. So yeah, you can do that too.
But wait, that's not all. If you download Beta 7 now, not only will you get podcasting support, but we will also throw in over twenty eight new professionally designed themes that you can apply to your blog!

Oh no, we're not done yet. Here are even more features in Lucky Beta #7 that we think some of you just might raise an eyebrow about:

  • Over 28 new themes professionally designed and illustrated. Select from minimalist themes, cityscapes or landscapes. Select a theme and go. No publishing necessary. Changes are instant.
  • Select the layout for your blog with no need to edit or install new templates. Just select from a variety of one, two and three columns layouts and go.
  • Use the revamped QuickPost feature to quickly create a post on your blog from anywhere on the Internet. Visiting a site you like? Click the QuickPost bookmark you added to your browser's toolbar and be blogging in seconds. (Oh yeah, and QuickPost also works for pages!)
  • Use a variety of new widgets for your blog including: a tag cloud, recently uploaded photos and more.
  • When publishing your blog a new progress indicator will show you the percentage complete of the entire process and how many pages remain at any given time.
  • Share an entry you created with a friend by emailing people in your Movable Type Address Book a summary and/or excerpt of your post.

Of course, none of this counts the usually impressive list of issues we fix each release, not to mention the shrinking list of known issues. If you have been waiting for a beta to try out for the first time, well, this is the one for you! Download it now.

Nice templates! I think you should create MT themes repository.

Does putting these themes out there mean the default templates have settled for this version?

Like Su I hope this means the templates have settled for MT 4, so we can start doing our own development work in anticipation of release and migrating to v.4 Personally I am itching to take this puppy online and start moving away from MT 3.3x

That said, MT 4 really is starting to look nice. Not that it didn’t before, but the shine is starting to show :)

Ooh, thanks for expanding on that. I did actually mean the HTML of the templates. Noticed on one of the prior betas that the pkg classes had been removed, so wasn’t sure if more was to come.

Wonderful. Then I can finally start to finalize my own setup. Should make dh happy not to hear so many “Wow now they have done this” or “Wow now I can do this too” or “Wow it is so much easier to do this, that or something else” or “()#$*$ why doesn’t this work” :D

Seriously though, this has been by far one of the best MT betas I have been a part of. Seems like every time I blink, you guys pull something new out of the hat to make things easier, more interesting and much more useful.

Is there a place where we can get some documentation on the new podcasting tags? I want to try them out, but I’m having a hard time figuring out the options and proper usage. For example, can we make an RSS only include assets that have a certain name, a certain tag, or were posted to a certain category? I’m hoping those of us with multiple podcasts won’t be left out in the cold.

HTML is final? I’m having and odd formatting problem then, and I can’t imagine I’m the only one with this problem. I do like the new templates and styles. I like the new back end organization so much, I’ll probably re-do my templates. However, the problem I’m having is an odd one.

My problem boils down to the blog I posted a link to here is having formatting issues with the text in the actual entries. This was a virgin blog that was updated with the style chooser function that’s in the control panel. Posted about it here:

I will admit that it has been kind of annoying in this beta to have new features released, but then no documentation on how to use the tags that accompany those new features. It hasn’t been that big of a deal, considering most of my time has been spent making sure that MT4 will work with my current MT3 site

Nice to see those Voxy templates drawn into the app. With a bit of luck more of them will be in place by the final release.

About the cityscapes. I expect you guys are going to get asked about other cities than the ones already there. I know I’d want Dallas & Pittsburgh. :)

That’s some pretty amazing templates I believe, the most beautiful I’ve seen with MT!

Way to go, MT! It’s hell of a publishing platform!

I’m had the formatting issue as well in the past, yet miraculously the problem has been solved.

The problem here is that this is cool if you host media on your site but far and wide the majority of us do not host our media on the same site as our blogs.

So when is MT4 gonnna support podcsting in a fashion that most of use?

First of all your not supporting podcasting for the high majority of us. See my full rant here.
