More Reasons to Upgrade to Movable Type 4.2 and RC2

Yesterday we release Movable Type 4.2 Release Candidate 2. This was an important milestone because this is the first release of MT 4.2 that our internal QA teams have fully certified to work against postgres. Release Candidate 2 also contains a number of important bug fixes and brings us one step closer to a full-fledged release.

Just by upgrading from Movable Type 4.2 from 4.1, and doing nothing else, we have seen performance increases of 33% while publishing. However it is possible to optimize your Movable Type installation even further by taking advantage of a number of the performance optimization and tuning tools built right into the product. To help our users understand how to best take advantage of these features and to obtain performance increases 45% and higher we have published a Movable Type 4.2 Upgrade Guide to the community wiki. When MT 4.2 is officially released, this guide will be incorporated into our official documentation, but for now we are seeking help from the community to review, refine and make it better.

In the meantime, allow me to give you a number of new reasons you may not have heard about to upgrade to Movable Type 4.2:

  • PostOffice - A moblogging plugin for Movable Type - Post to your Movable Type via any email client.
  • Translate - Bring your blog to the entire world by making it simple for readers to translate any of your content to another language.
  • iMT - Movable Type's iPhone plugin has been updated to work with MT 4.2. And yes, it will work with the iPhone 3G.
  • Picnik Photo Editor - Edit any image asset in Movable Type via a simple but powerful web interface, just like you would edit in Photoshop!

Are the site templates pretty much set in stone now for final release? ie: are they safe to incorporate with customized site layouts and be fairly confident that there will be no further changes between now and final release? Or better to just wait. Apologies if this has already been asked.

There may be bug fixes if any are found, but other than that. Yes, they are pretty solid. This is a release candidate after all!

Has this bug been fixed? Didn’t see it in the notes: http://bugs.movabletype.org/default.asp?79853

Basically the categories in Universal Template just show “n” number of entries but there is no way to show the archive of the category.

If you look at the bug, you’ll see it’s assigned to TheNextRelease.

Sorry, I didn’t understand this. Does TheNextRelease mean 4.3 or 4.2 RC3?

It’s just a bin for stuff that’s not going to be worked on for fixing in the immediate. It means, abstractly, the full release of the application(whatever version number that ends up being), not the next build of the currently-working version(which would be RC3).

I’ve been running 4.2 RC1 now and have been pleased by its stability and performance. I may skip RC3 and wait for the gold copy, unless something major pops up. Any ETA on the gold copy?

Ditto on the ETA question. I mean — is it weeks? months?

@Rottenchester, @maflynn - We hate saying definitively when the product will be ready. We are committed to making this an incredibly stable, fast and secure release. So a lot of effort is being put into testing and verification. We want to ensure plugin compatibility and million other things. That being said, we are not months away. Less than a month we think. Just be patient. RC2 is the most stable version of MT4 ever released. Download it and try it out, and if you find a problem there is still time to have it fixed!

There is a bug in MT4.2rc2 (commercial) with showing data from custom fields. Unfortunately since I’ve usually had so much good luck with MT’s release candidates being pretty solid, I decided to not make a backup of my database in phpMyAdmin this time. Now I’m stuck waiting for the problem to be fixed before I’ll be able to update my website again. It takes too long to set up or else I’d just start over from scratch.

I filled out a report there. It seems like mostly Six Apart members are on there, though so I didn’t feel like I was in the right place.

Dennis: Ah, okay. The reason for that is primarily that it used to be an internal tool. But it’s now available to everyone for filing stuff since the switch to GPL.

Lost Custom Field values has been a problem since B2 : http://forums.movabletype.org/2008/05/professional-pack-rc1—-custom.html

I’ve filled a bug report and have been anxiously waiting for a fix for the last 2 releases (RC1, RC2).
