A little more than a week ago we released Movable Type 4.0 and the response it has received has been extraordinary. More and more people are upgrading to and making the switch to MT4 every day, and with every new user comes more feedback, and with Movable Type gaining so much momentum we wanted to do our best to keep up.

So we are happy to announce the release of Movable Type 4.01 Beta 1 which has three primary goals:

  • To address high priority issues found by users following the release of Movable Type 4.0; the majority of these issues revolving around issues users faced with upgrading from previous versions of Movable Type and migrating to MT4 from other blogging platforms.
  • To make the necessary changes to the core application in support of the upcoming availability of the Movable Type Enterprise Solution.
  • To support developers who are in the process of upgrading their existing plugins and developing entirely new plugins for the MT4 platform.

We expect that this release will cover all the primary issues in MT 4.0 and do not anticipate the need to release a MT 4.02 or other 4.0x release unless any security or other critical issues are found which require them. This means you only need to upgrade if you are affected by the issues detailed on the 4.01 Beta page. Note: This is a beta of 4.01, you don't need to upgrade until the final release of 4.01 is available.

You can download Movable Type 4.01 Beta 1 from the 4.01 Beta Homepage where you will also see a detailed change log for this release and a list of known issues we still intend to fix before 4.01 is officially released.

As with a our previous betas, if you find a problem and would like to report it, please use our feedback form. No issue is too small. We especially encourage developers to submit issues they find as it will help us to fix bugs they find and/or update our documentation to make instructions on building a plugin more clear.

I have to laugh. I just saw this announcement in my feed reader, and it exhibits the bug I reported in MT4 beta 5 (bug #54177) - where entries written using Markdown/Smartypants are not parsed into XML/HTML in published feeds, even though they appear correctly formatted on the entry's page.

Now that this bug is evident on the MT blog itself, will it be fixed soon?

Just when is movabletype going to be released as Open Source Software? I was mistaken to believe that it was going to be a simultaneous release of MT 4 and MTOS. Could this be clarified here?

Hi Derek, sorry for the mixup. MT OS will be out soon -- we're just finalizing the plan for getting everything together and will announce a timeline as soon as that's done. It should probably only be a few weeks, and the gap between MT4.0 and the open source release is here to give us time to set up a public bug tracker, all the requisite mailing lists, the rest of the code repository work, and some other resources. Until then, the Professional Network mailing list and community is the best place to get info.

We also wanted to get the chance to do slight fixes like MT 4.01 so that everyone's working from the most solid code base possible when they start contributing.
